Traveling with balance

Do you travel using balance on your OV-chipkaart? When you check in, an initial boarding fare is reserved from your balance. When you check out, the amount is returned and you only pay for your journey.

This is how it works

Step 1: Checking in

  • When you check in, a boarding fare is deducted from your balance.

Step 2: Checking out

  • When you check out, this amount is refunded.
  • You only pay for the cost of your journey.

Note

If you don't check out, you will pay the full boarding fare.

Topping up your balance

You can top up your balance at a ticket machine at the station or at other points of sale.

Automatic top-up

Do you always want to have enough balance on your card? Then choose automatic top-up.

Pre-ordering balance

You can also pre-order balance. If you then check in with NS, the balance will be loaded onto your card immediately.

How much balance do you need?

Always make sure your card has at least the boarding fare. For buses, trams, and metros this is €4. For the train, this is €20 (NS) or €10 (Arriva/Syntus).

The boarding fare may differ depending on the operator or service. For current amounts, check your operator's website.

Missed a check-in or check-out?

Did you forget to check in or out? You might have paid too much. You can often easily request your money back.

In 3 steps

  1. Go to uitcheckgemist.nl.
  2. Complete your journey.
  3. Request your refund.

Tip

Sign up for the Uitcheck Gemist Alert. You’ll receive a notification if you miss a check-in or check-out.

Picking someone up or waving them off

Do you want to pick someone up or wave goodbye at a station? Sometimes you need to check in.

If you check out again within 20 minutes, you won’t pay any fees. At NS you have up to 60 minutes for this.
