Follow these steps to request a refund of your balance.

Yes, you can. Go to End card, enter your details, and request your balance refund. You’ll still need to visit a ticket machine to deactivate your card. After that, you can no longer use it. We’ll transfer the remaining balance to your account within 15 days.

Request balance refund

From 1 July 2026, you can no longer buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart. Is your anonymous OV-chipkaart expired? Switch to the new OV-pas or check in and out with your payment card.

Buy your OV-chipkaart via ov-chipkaart.nl or at official service points such as the transport companies. There you pay the recommended price of €7.50. On other commercial websites, you often end up paying much more due to unnecessary extra fees. If this has happened to you, report it to the passengers’ association Rover (meldpunt.rover.nl).

Immediately after ordering the OV-chipkaart, the order will be send to production. This is an automatic process. Personal cards cannot be canceled due to their personal nature.

The shipping time of 1 week has passed, but you haven't received your OV-chipkaart. This could happen because of one of multiple reasons:

Check the address you used for your application in the confirmationmail.

You will find the address to which your OV-chipkaart was send in the confirmationmail. You have filled in the address by yourself.

Is the address in the confirmation mail the right one? Please contact us.

You will find the used address in your confirmation mail. This means there must be another reason why your OV-chipkaart has not arrived. Please contact us about this.

Check the address mentioned in the confirmation mail. Do you see the right address? Please contact us.

Do you not see the right address? Apply for a replacement card through your OV-chip account.

Have you not received a confirmation mail?

Please contact us. We will find out what went wrong.

From the age of 4, children need their own OV-chipkaart*. Until that age, children travel for free on public transport and an OV-chipkaart is not necessary.

You can apply for a personal OV-chipkaart card for a child aged three years and fifty weeks. With a personal card, your child will receive anage discount. With theKids Vrij subscription from NS, children up to the age of 12 travel for free with their parents on the train.

* Check the conditions for traveling with children with your carrier. With some carriers, children do not need their own OV-chipkaart and they can travel for free.

The photo you use will appear on the personal OV-chipkaart. So the person travelling with the card must be clearly recognisable in the photo.

You can use a photo from your holiday, a photo you have scanned or take a photo with a webcam. There are a number of requirements for the photograph. You yourself are responsible for providing a photograph that is a good likeness and meets these requirements.

Be of the person that is going to use the card;

be in focus and must not be too light or too dark. The face must be recognisable;

be a minimum of 50 kB and maximum of 5 MB; 

only show the face of the person travelling with the card;

show the whole face. Chin, mouth, nose, ears and eyebrows must be visible, even if you are wearing something on your head; 

Please check the card example to ensure your selection is correct. Rotate the picture if necessary.

The recommended price is €7.50. However, public transport companies can set their own price for the OV-chipkaart, so it may be higher or lower. Check with your public transport company for special offers.

From 1 July 2026, you can no longer buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart.

Have you lost your OV-chipkaart or is it expired? Switch to the new OV-pas or check in and out with your payment card. You can order a new OV-pas on ovpay.nl for €6.

Did you still have balance on your old OV-chipkaart?

The OV-chipkaart will stop, expected by the end of 2027. Until then, you can still travel with the OV-chipkaart. After 2027, the OV-chipkaart will no longer work. The OV-chipkaart will be replaced by OVpay. This means travelling with the new OV-pas or with your payment card.

From 1 July 2026, the anonymous OV-chipkaart will no longer be sold. If you still have an anonymous OV-chipkaart, you can use it to travel until the end of 2027.

Apply for an OV-chipkaart


You want to perform an action on our website, such as creating an account or requesting a link code or recovery email. For this we send an automatically generated e-mail. Due to an error with e-mail providers, it can happen that these e-mails do not arrive. Below we explain what you can do.

I have a Hotmail, Outlook or Live email address

1. Go to this website (new screen) and log in.

2. Go to the settings. And choose Show all Outlook settings.

3. Go to Email and then to Junk Email.

4. Under the heading Blocked senders and domains you will find all blocked email addresses. You can search the list. Then search for OV-chipkaart, for example. You approve the e-mail addresses that appear by clicking on the trash can.

5. Perform the operation again. You should now receive the email. It may take a few minutes for the email to arrive. Also keep an eye on the spam folder just to be sure.

2.1 I use a computer: click on your profile picture or initials on your computer at the top right. Then choose Manage your Google account.

2.2 I am using an Android phone or tablet: Open the settings of your device and find Google. Then choose Manage your Google account.

2.3 I use an iPhone or iPad: Open Gmail or Google. Click on your profile picture or initials at the top right. Then select Manage your Google account.

5. You will find a list of blocked email addresses. To unblock, select Remove next to that contact's name.

6. Perform the operation again. You should now receive the email. It may take a few minutes for the email to arrive. Also keep an eye on the spam folder just to be sure.

1. On your Apple device, go to the settings.

3. Under message threads, choose Blocked.

4. Swipe to the left the contact you want to unblock. You then click on Unblock.

It is possible that your e-mail address belongs to another provider. Then go to the settings and search under contacts. Are you stuck? Then contact your email provider.

Not sure who your email provider is? This is the company where you created your email address. You can usually find this in the last part of your email address, after the at sign.


Did you move or do you have a new phone number or email address? If you have a personal OV-chipkaart, it is very important that we have the right contact- and address information. Do you have a subscription on your OV-chipkaart? Make sure that you report the same changes to the carrier.

Change your address details or bank account number online

You can change your address details and bank account number (for automatic reload) online.

Is your name or date of birth* incorrect? Request a replacement card through your OV-chipaccount.

* As of January 2020, the date of birth will not be printed on your card. It will be registered in the chip.

Create an OV-chip account quick and easy. Link your OV-chipkaart tot your OV-chipaccount. After that, you can change the details you want.

Change your personal details by getting in contact with us

Changing contact details can not be done online

It is important that you provide us with the right contact details. Is your phone number and/or e-mail address changed recently? Please contact us about this.

Cyber criminals target everything that has value, including your personal data. Because the security of your personal data is our top priority, we inform you here about the importance of a strong and unique password.

Why do I need a strong and unique password?

A strong password is important because it prevents others from guessing your password. In addition to having a strong password, it is also important to have a unique password.

In the unlikely event that your username and password from one online account ends up with malicious parties, it is important that these details cannot be used to log in to other online accounts. You can prevent this by using a unique password for every online account you create.

Are you not yet using a strong and unique password for your Mijn OV-chip account? Then reset your password.

Use passwords of at least 10 characters. Longer is better than complex.

Use upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.

Avoid obvious passwords, such as names or dates of birth.

Use a different password for each website or account.

Change your password regularly, including your email account password.
The security and confidentiality of your data with OV-chipkaart is guaranteed by our privacy policy.

You can change your password. You will then receive a recovery email to the email address with which the OV-chip account was registered. Then follow the instructions in the recovery email you received.

It is possible that your OV-chip account is registered with an old e-mail address. You then cannot change your password.

In that case, we recommend that you create a new OV-chip account. You can link your OV-chipkaart to the new account.

Do you want to delete your current OV-chip account? Please contact us. State the username and email address with which the account is registered.

Can't log in because you can't remember your username? Then request your username.

You can request your username. Please click here. We will send the username to the e-mail address which was used for creating the OV-chipaccount.

This is how you link an OV-chipkaart to your account

Enter the 6-digit link code that you received at Mijn OV-chipkaarten.

Or you haven't activated your account in time. You can create a new account via the link here. Do not forget to activate your account.

You can change your password, request your username, or both by clicking on the link.

Your OV-chip account will be temporarily locked to protect it. This sometimes happens when the login attempt is successful. You can log in again after 24 hours.

Due to security reasons, it is sometimes not possible to reach an account from abroad. You will see an error message when this happens. The error message has some instructions to resolve this.

You have entered the wrong password too many times

Your OV-chip account is temporarily blocked. You can log in again after two hours. Are you still unable to log in? Then you may not remember your password correctly. Reset your password or create a new OV-chip account.

You did not receive the password recovery email

Is your OV-chip account registered with an old e-mail address that you no longer have access to? Then you will not receive the email. You can create a new OV-chip account.
You may also not receive the email because your email provider is blocking our automatic emails. There is a separate guide for this that you can find below.

You can create a travel expenses overview through your public transport travel history. This is possible for either a personal or an anonymous card.

1. Log in with your username and password.

3. Choose the OV-chipkaart you would like to view the transactions for.

4. Choose the period you would like to view the transactions for (week, weekend or month). Do you want an overview of more than one month? Download separate overviews per month.

5. Select the transactions you would like to include in your expenses overview. You can do this by clicking on the boxes under the word 'declare'.

6. Your check-out transactions are selected as standard. You can also deselect these, of course.

7. Click on the button 'create expenses overview'.

8. Then click on the PDF button in the top right of your overview.

9. Your expenses overview will be displayed. You can save or print this file.

Create your annual expenses overview after March 1st

We recommend that you create an annual overview for the previous year after March 1st. Sometimes operators send transactions later. This may mean that you are still missing transactions before March 1st.

Travel on public transport is subject to 9% VAT

We think it’s important that your OV-chip account is well protected. That’s why you can use two-step verification. This is an extra layer of security where you confirm your identity in two steps. You’ll receive a verification code by email, which you then use to log in to My OV-chip.

Go to Details > Turn two-step verification on or off.

Tick the box next to Activate two-step verification and confirm.

Your account is now better protected. You’ll receive a verification code by email the next time you log in.

Good to know: Creating a new OV-chip account? You can activate two-step verification right away.

No, only the first time you log in. After that, we trust the browser you’re using for 30 days. After 30 days, or if you use a different browser or device, you’ll receive a new verification code to log in.

Log in and go to Data. Then click on Delete account.

My OV-chip account

If your card is no longer working, first check that the card is definitely broken. You can do this as follows:

Check if your OV-chipkaart is really broken

Is there a negative balance on your OV-chipkaart? In this case you are not able to check in at this moment. Reload your credit to be able to travel again.

Did you forget to check out more than 12 times? Then your card will be blocked. You can remove this temporary blockage at a counter of the operator you checked in with most recently.

If you have automatic reloading on your card, your credit may have been temporarily blocked because failed collections have not been paid. Check this website to see what to do.

Is your debt more than € 60? Then your card might also be temporarily blocked. You can find out how to pay this and remove the block here.

To be certain that there is something wrong with your card, you can go to a service desk closest to you.

Report this and request a replacement online. A replacement costs € 11 and is valid for another five years. You will receive the replacement within 1 week.

Do you use a subscription normally? Please contact the provider of this subscription for a temporary fix.

Is there any credit left on the OV-chipkaart? Then you will receive this on your IBAN within 15 days.

You cannot replace an anonymous OV-chipkaart. Cancel your OV-chipkaart. After you cancel it, you will also get your balance back.

Then apply for a new OV-pas or use your payment card to check in and out.

Your OV-chipkaart is valid for 5 years. After that, you can no longer use it to travel.

The OV-chipkaart is being replaced by OVpay. This means travelling with the new OV-pas or with your payment card. Not all subscriptions or travel products work with OVpay yet. Check the Switch Helper to see if you can already switch.

Can’t switch to OVpay yet? Renew your OV-chipkaart. You can do this from 6 weeks before the end date, up to 1 year after. A new card costs €7.50. Your subscriptions and products will be added to your new card automatically. You will get the balance from your old card back in your account 15 days after the expiry date.

Terminate your OV-chipkaart and get your balance back

Do you still have balance on your OV-chipkaart? Terminate your OV-chipkaart. You will then get your balance back.

From 1 July 2026, you can no longer buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart. Is your OV-chipkaart expired? Switch to the new OV-pas or check in and out with your payment.

Good to know: a blocked card cannot be unblocked again!

Did you lose your personal OV-chipkaart? Then block your card as soon as possible. Your card will be blocked at midnight on the following day at the latest. Until this time you bear the risk of loss of card balance yourself.

An anonymous OV-chipkaart is not protected. This means that, after loss or theft, you cannot block and replace the card. This also means that you will not get a refund of the remaining card balance.

I have an OV-chip account and my OV-chipkaart is linked.

Block (and replace) your OV-chipkaart through your OV-chip account. You will receive the remaining card balance within 15 days. You will receive the replacement card within 3 working days.

I have an OV-chip account, but my OV-chipkaart is not linked.

Do you know the OV-chipkaart number and expiration date? Link your OV-chipkaart to your OV-chip account and block (and replace) your card. If you do not know this, call us.

I do not have an OV-chip account, but I do know the card details.

Create an OV-chip account and link your OV-chipkaart. Then block (and replace) your card.

I do not have an OV-chip account and I do not know my card details.

Do you not have an OV-chip account and are the card details unknown? Then call us as soon as possible.

If you still have a valid subscription or travel product on your old card, we will transfer this subscription or travel product to your replacement card.

Subscriptions and travel products are not terminated automatically. Terminate these yourself with your carrier.

If you had automatic reloading on your old card, we will transfer automatic reloading to your replacement card. When you check in for the first time, the card will immediately be automatically reloaded.

Do you want automatic reloading on your new OV-chipkaart? Request this online after you have received your new OV-chipkaart.

Replace or renew your OV-chipkaart

If you no longer wish to travel on credit, you can request a refund or cash in your credit. How you do this depends on your OV-chipkaart.

Terminate OV-chipkaart and ask for a refund

The way you ask for a refund depends on your OV-chipkaart (expired or not). We have a tool that helps you get your money back. Click on the button below, fill in the required fields and ask for a refund.

OV-chipkaart has joined Closure to make things easier.. Do you have a subscription with another company? You can easily terminate this too.


Is there some balance left on your OV-chipkaart? Then you will receive the balance on your bank account within 15 days.

Terminate OV-chipkaart

If you forget to check-in or check-out, your trip will be incomplete. You will pay the full step-in fee. You can request your money back via uitcheckgemist.nl.

It can take a while before you can request your money back on www.uitcheckgemist.nl. Even if this is already visible on your travel history, the system might still need some time to make sure this is a missed check-out. It is often the case that it takes up to 15 days before you can request your money back.

You can usually correct your missed check-out within 15 days of it happening. There are some reasons why you cannot claim this, however:

Has your OV chip card expired, been replaced or terminated? Then you can no longer submit a claim. That is because you can no longer collect the credit at a ticket machine with your OV-chipkaart.

You have reached the maximum number of claims

You may request a refund for a maximum of three journeys per carrier between January and June and between July and December.

Please note: for NS, you can submit an application for a refund a maximum of three times per calendar year. After that, this is only possible via NS.

You have NS Flex and a missed check-out with NS

Do you have an NS Flex subscription? Then you can only request a refund on www.uitcheckgemist.nl for travels with other carriers. Did you miss a check-out with NS? Then request your balance back via NS.

You were in a station for longer than 60 minutes

You have an hour to remain at a station without paying for it. After this, NS keeps the step-in tarif.

Fill in the same destination for both the check-in spot as the check-out spot on www.uitcheckgemist.nl. You will get the full step-in tarif back. 

Missed check-out

You can change your reload amount via your OV-chipaccount. This change is not applied until you confirm it at a pick-up point, so make sure you do so!

You can always terminate automatic reload via your OV-chipaccount. Make sure you confirm your termination by picking up the termination at a pick-up point.

You change your bank account number via your OV-chipaccount. You pay €0,01 via iDEAL. You don't need to confirm this at a pick-up point and your change will be confirmed within 24 hours.

Your OV-chipkaart is automatically topped up. We advance the amount and deduct it later—within 15 days. Want to know the exact day your OV-chipkaart was topped up? You can see this on your bank statement or in your OV travel history.

We would never debit from your bank account without reason. This might have different causes:

When the balance of your OV-chipkaart is topped up, you get the balance instantly. We will collect the money within 15 days from your bank account. In the description of the payment, you find the moment when it was topped up on your OV-chipkaart. You can compare this to your travel history on your OV-chipaccount.

As soon as you check in at a station with the means to check-out a few minutes later, your balance will be topped up if needed. This also happens if you do not technically travel.

Tip: At a NS machine you can pick up a passage product for free. For more information, go to this website.

It is possible that your balance is being topped up twice in a row. For example, this can happen if you check-in with NS since your balance must be at least € 20. Did you choose to top up your OV-chipkaart with € 10 every time. Then it might happen that there are two top up moments after one another.

It is also possible that your card has been topped up sooner than you thought was necessary. This might be because you missed a check-in or check-out at some point. You can find out if this is the case at this website.

Contact our customer services. We can look into your travel history and help you fix the problem or give you some clearance.

To prevent you from creating a debt. We advise you to not cancel the payment from your bank.

We only do one direct debit. So make sure you always have enough money on your bank account for this direct debit. Did the direct debit fail? Then you will get a payment reminder via email that you can pay. Please make sure to regularly check if your mail address is still correct, and check your spam folder if you suspect a debit has failed.

You will receive a letter if you do not pay the outstanding amount with instructions on how to pay it. If you do not pay this within 15 days of the date mentioned in the letter, your case will be forwarded to a collection agency.

Did you receive an email or letter from OV-chipkaart administration (noreplyadministratie@ov-chipkaart.nl)?

Please contact them on 0900-681 24 47 (usual costs). This phone number is reachable on business days from 8.30 until 17.00.

Did you receive a letter from collection agency Intrum (email@intrum.com)?

Then one or multiple direct debits have failed and your debt has been transferred to collection agency Intrum. Please contact Intrum for more information via 088-020 17 00 (usual costs). This phone number is reachable on business days from 08.30 until 17.00.

Automatic reloading is activated on your OV-chipkaart. We were unable to collect the reloading amount from your bank account. You received an email or letter informing you of the failed collection(s). We have not yet received a (total) payment from you. In order to prevent your debt increasing, the credit on your card has been blocked. This happens in the following two cases:

1. We have not yet received the amount of the failed collection(s) from you. We have passed the debt on to collection agency Intrum. You will receive a letter about this from Intrum.
2. The amount of the failed collection(s) is higher than € 60. You will receive a letter about this from the OV-chipkaart Administration Department.

Transfer the amount due as soon as possible.

Have you received an e-mail or letter from the OV-chipkaart Administration? Transfer the amount to NL03 RABO 0306 4988 55 in the name of Trans Link Systems B.V. Mention the debtor number in the e-mail/letter.

Did you receive a letter from Intrum? Then transfer the amount to NL64DEUT0265294916 in the name of St. Derdengelden Intrum. Mention the file number in the letter.

The letter you received from the OV-chipkaart Administration Department/ Intrum includes the account number to which you can transfer the amount. Once they have received the total outstanding amount, you will be able to unblock your credit within three business days.

You will do this at a pick-up device. Insert your card into the machine. Follow the instruction and wait for the credit to be unblocked.

Automatic reload

Subscriptions are offered by the carrier that you travel with. Do you have a question about a specific subscription? Please contact your carrier.

You need to have at least the entrance fee on your OV-chipkaart to check in. For subscription holders, this is € 10,-, for regular OV-chipkaarten, this is € 20,-.

It is possible that the displayed amount on the website is not correct. There can be multiple reasons why this happens.

It is possible that the carrier you have traveled with did not yet process the transactions. We depent on the carrier to process everything.

If you question this, you can always contact the carrier you traveled with.

Do you check your card balance on the website right after topping up your balance at a machine? Then it is possible that it has not been processed yet.

Did you order balance online? Then you need to go to a servicepoint near you to pick up the balance.

Do you check the balance of an OV-chipkaart you have replaced or renewed? Then you might see that there is € 0 on your Ov-chipkaart. We already transfered the balance to you in that case.

Do you want to be sure about your card balance? Go to a servicepoint near you to check this. You can do this at a machine of at a service desk.

The OV-chipkaart was introduced in 2007. After all these years, its technology has become outdated and needs to be replaced. 

The current OV-chipkaart is being replaced by OVpay. With OVpay, you choose how to check in and out: with the new OV-pas, your debit card, mobile phone, or smartwatch.
