What does 'boarding fare' mean?

The boarding fare* is the amount you pay when you check in. This amount is temporarily deducted from your OV-chipkaart. When you check out, the boarding fare, minus the cost of your journey, is returned to your card.

Tip: Don't forget to check out! Otherwise you will lose your full boarding fare.

* the boarding fare may vary by operator

Calculation example

Your credit is €15. When you check in, a boarding fare of €4 is temporarily deducted. The cost of your journey is €2.70. When you check out, the boarding fare, minus the cost of your journey, is returned to your card. In this case €4 - €2.70 = €1.30. The final credit on your OV-chipkaart is then €15 – €2.70 = €12.30.

The amounts in this calculation example are intended only as an explanation. See also the current boarding fares.
