What is the OV-chipkaart?

The OV-chipkaart is the payment method for public transport in the Netherlands. If you carry an OV-chipkaart with you, you no longer need to think about strip tickets or metro tickets. You load credit onto the card in Euro or add a travel product, such as a single journey, a monthly pass for commuting or a season ticket.

Advantages

The OV-chipkaart has many advantages. You can view details of your travel online, you no longer need to queue for the ticket office and you can easily transfer to another form of public transport without having to purchase a new ticket.

Two cards

There are two different cards: a personal OV-chipkaart and an anonymous OV-chipkaart. With a number of public transport companies you can also purchase disposable cards.
Which card is right for you?

Bank card

The OV-chipkaart is a plastic card, the same size as a bank card, that fits in your purse or wallet. There are several different cards in circulation. For example the OV-chipkaarts for NS, GVB or RET, as well as personal and anonymous OV-chipkaarts. You can always recognise an OV-chipkaart by the pink logo. The chip in the OV-chipkaart is not visible.

Your personal OV-chipkaart shows your photo, date of birth*, the expiry date and the OV-chipkaart number. An anonymous OV-chipkaart (often) shows the operator's logo and the expiry date. *Since January 2020 no longer printed on the card.
