Checking in and out

Checking in and out

At the start of your journey, hold the OV-chipkaart against the screen on a gate or card reader, you can identify these by the OV-chipkaart logo.

If you have sufficient credit or a valid travel product on your card, the gate will open or the card reader will beep to confirm and a green light will show. At the end of your journey, hold your OV-chipkaart against a gate or card reader again to check out. The display will show the cost of your journey and how much credit is left on your card.

Boarding fare

If you travel on credit, the boarding fare will be debited from your card when you check in. When you check out, the boarding fare will be refunded and you will be charged for the number of kilometres you travelled. If you do not check out, you will pay the full boarding fare. If you are unable to check out, due to a defective card reader for example, you can request a refund for any overpayment from your public transport company.

Read more about the boarding fare.

Checking in using a travel product

With a travel product on your card, you must check in and out on all modes of public transport. No boarding fare will be debited from your card. The travel product you are using will be displayed in Dutch on the card reader screen. For example NS Reizen op Saldo 2e klasse or Altijd korting 1 jaar.

Travel with NS

To travel on credit with NS using your OV-chipkaart, you will need to go to an NS card device with your personal or anonymous OV-chipkaart. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader. Choose 'Load credit' and follow the instructions on the screen. You will then indicate whether you wish to travel first or second class. Your card is now ready for use with NS. If you transfer from one NS train to another NS train, you will not need to check out and check in again. You will check in and out on the platform or in the main station concourse.
