Passengers with a visual impairment

For passengers with a visual impairment, it is often difficult to know whether payment with an OV-chipkaart has been successful. People with a visual impairment can therefore choose from a range of cards and travel products for travel on public transport. Which travel product will suit you depends on which type of transport you use most.

You can choose from the following travel products:

    You will need a Public Transport Companion Card for all these travel products. For OV-chip Plus and the NS Business Card, there should be a 'B' on the card.

    OV-chip Plus

    OV-chip Plus is only for the train, you do not need to check in and out but instead book your journey in advance over the phone.

    The OV-chip Plus is convenient if you:

    • have difficulty checking in and out during your train journey
    • travel by train
    • have a personal OV-chipkaart
    • wish to pay travel fares at a later date

    You can book your train journey over the phone with NS Customer Services before you travel. You therefore do not need to check in and out with the OV-chipkaart. With OV-chip Plus you can travel throughout the Netherlands with all train operators. OV-chip Plus is valid in combination with all NS passes. For a journey by bus, tram or metro, it is not possible to book a journey in advance. You will need to check in and out for this.

    Apply for OV-chip Plus

    You can apply for OV-chip Plus in three simple steps:

    1. Apply through the NS website (new window)
    2. Load the pass onto your card once at an NS service desk, NS card device or another pick-up point. Find a pick-up device near you.
    3. Book your journey over the phone with NS Customer Services; this is possible until a few minutes before departure.

    You are now ready to travel. Your travel costs will be collected from your account by direct debit once a month, after you have travelled.

    NS-Business Card

    The NS-Business Card is for all public transport but also if you only travel by bus, tram or metro; can be used in combination with OV-chip Plus for the train.

    The NS Business Card is convenient if you:

    • mainly have trouble checking in and out on the tram, bus or metro
    • want to fix missed check-outs automatically
    • wish to pay travel fares at a later date

    With the NS Business Card you check in and out on all public transport. You do not need to load any credit onto your OV-chipkaart in advance. You will receive an invoice for the journeys you made at the end of the month. With the NS Business Card you can therefore travel on account on all public transport.

    The NS Business Card is free and various business NS passes can be added. The NS Business Card does not offer any age discount and cannot be used in combination with passes for the bus, tram or metro, however. 
    You can use the NS Business Card for the bus, tram and metro alongside OV-chip Plus for the train. In this case you will use two separate cards.

    Always check in and out with the NS Business Card

    With the NS Business Card, checking in and out is compulsory. If this is unsuccessful or goes wrong, this will be fixed for you by the Public Transport Service Desk for the Blind and Visually Impaired. You will then receive a refund of the overpaid credit. 

    With the NS Business Card, you will pay your travel fares and any pass costs through a direct debit. The service and direct debit are provided by the Public Transport Service Desk for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The collection takes place once a month, around 1.5 months after the end of the month in which the journeys were made.

    OV-chip Plus with NS-Business Card

    You cannot combine OV-chip Plus and the NS-Business Card on one card, but you can use them together. You will then travel with two cards: a personal OV-chipkaart for the OV-chip Plus product and an NS Business Card for travel on the bus, tram and metro.

    Apply for an NS-Business Card 

    You can apply for the NS-Business Card from the Public Transport Service Desk for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Available via 0800-484 84 00 (free) or via serviceloket@ov-chipkaart.nl. The Service Desk is available on weekdays from 8.00 to 18.00.

    Change to NS-Business Card 

    Would you like an NS-Business Card and do you currently have another NS pass? After the first year, you can cancel your current NS subscription monthly. This can be done from the day your pass started. If your pass started on 24 April, for example, you can cancel your pass from 24 May, 24 June etc. The cancellation is not automatic.

    Sentire

    Sentire is only for bus, tram and metro. The boarding fare is lower than normal.

    Sentire is convenient if you:

    • mainly travel by tram, bus or metro
    • have a personal OV-chipkaart
    • wish to travel on credit
    • are entitled to an age discount

    You travel on credit and pay the normal travel costs on the bus, tram, metro and public transport on water. However, the boarding fare is lower than normal. You pay € 1,20 instead of € 4. The boarding fare is based on the average cost of a journey within urban and regional transport in the Netherlands. You are also entitled to the standard age discount applicable on urban and regional transport.

    Apply for Sentire

    The Sentire pass is free and can only be loaded onto a personal OV-chipkaart. Sentire is available at the counters for all public transport companies except NS. 
    You can also apply for Sentire in writing through Connexxion using the application and authorisation form (Dutch, pdf). Or you can call Connexxion: 0900-266 63 99 (local rate). You can load the Sentire pass onto your card within two weeks at a pick-up point near you
