Travel with the student travel product

If you have a personal OV-chipkaart and there is a valid student travel product on it, then you are ready to travel on public transport. Travel with the student travel product is very simple. When you get on, check in. When you get off, check out. The time you check in determines whether you will travel free or with a discount for your whole journey.

How does checking in and out work?

Checking in and out with the student travel product is compulsory throughout the Netherlands: on the bus, tram, train and metro. Including during your free-travel period. The time you check in determines whether you will travel free or with a discount for your whole journey. If you transfer from one mode of transport to another, such as from the tram to the bus, then you will need to check out on the tram and check in again on the bus. This also applies to transferring from one operator to another. Such as from an NS train to an Arriva train.

You can find more information from the operator you travel with.

Checking in

Hold the OV-chipkaart up to or against the OV-chipkaart logo on the card reader. If the check-in was successful, you will hear a beep and a green light will show. You will see a check-in message on the screen. When you check in at a gate, the gate will open if it was successful. Your OV-chipkaart is checked when you check in.

Travelling during your free-travel period?

In this case you will travel for free. The card reader will recognise your product and check that this is valid.

Travelling outside your free-travel period?

In this case you will travel (and pay) on credit. Make sure you have enough (at least € 10) credit on your card. A boarding fare will then be temporarily debited from your credit. Your travel costs will be offset against this at the end of your journey. If you have negative credit, you will not be able to travel. When you check in you will then hear a different beep and a red light will show. In this case you need to load credit onto the card first. At an NS device you can top up your credit by € 4, € 10, € 20, € 30, € 40, € 50 and € 100.

Checking out

It is very important not to forget to check out! You check out by holding the OV-chipkaart up to or against the logo on the card reader again.

N.B.: The student travel product is not valid on any bus, tram and metro operators' night networks. If you make a journey on the Thalys or IntercityDirect, a supplement will apply.
