Launch in phases
In more and more places in The Netherlands you can travel with the OV-chipkaart.
When is it my turn?
To find out whether your public transport company already enables the use of the OV-chipkaart, please contact your public transport company.
Will I still be able to use my current (season) tickets?
In most regions, you will be able to continue using your current (season) tickets as long as the launch of the OV-chipkaart throughout the Netherlands has not been completed. Afterward, travel tickets other than the OV-chipkaart will gradually be cancelled. This will be announced in time, in the media and by the public transport companies. Most public transport companies will contact you about the switch from your current travel product (season ticket) into an OV-chipkaart. Contact your public transport company if you have any queries.
Will I still be able to use my “strippenkaart”?
In the transitional phase, you will still be able to use your "strippenkaart". The State Secretary for Transport, Public Works and Water Management is responsible for the decision as to when the “strippenkaart” will no longer be a valid means of payment for the public transport system. This will be announced in time, in the media and by the public transport companies, so that everyone will have enough time to use their old "strippenkaart".
“Strippenkaart” or an OV-chipkaart?
If your journey includes one or more transfers and one of the public transport companies is not ready for the OV-chipkaart yet, you would pay the boarding rate twice. In this case, it is cheaper to use the “strippenkaart” for the the entire journey, until the OV-chipkaart is introduced throughout The Netherlands.
Tranferring to or from the metro in Rotterdam/Amsterdam?
The OV-chipkaart is the only valid payment method in the Amsterdam and Rotterdam metro. You travel by bus, tram or train and you tranfer to the metro or vice versa? You are advised to pay for your whole trip with your OV-chipkaart. If this is not possible, check with RET or GVB if you can apply for compensation.
